How to add a poster/thumbnail image with the SmartVideo plugin for WordPress

Updated February 20, 2023

A brief “how-to” for users of the SmartVideo plugin for WordPress

If you have the SmartVideo plugin for WordPress installed and want to learn how to add a custom poster image or thumbnail to your video, then you’re in the right place.

If you have installed SmartVideo using another method and want to learn how to add a custom poster image or thumbnail, take a look at our SmartVideo tag options article.

Adding a poster image / thumbnail

When adding a video manually with our plugin, SmartVideo uses the first frame of your video as the default poster image. If you want to add a custom poster image instead, simply follow the instructions below.

After adding a video to a page, click on Poster in the block settings. You will now see a dropdown menu that can be used to choose the source of your video’s poster image. In the gif below, an image is chosen from the WordPress Media Library and used as the video’s poster image.

If the image you want to use is publicly available on the web, you can add it by inserting the image’s URL instead.

Ideally, your image should be the same aspect ratio as your video file.
