Will videos playback while they're being optimized?

Updated November 6, 2026

Short answer: yes. From the moment SmartVideo has your video, it plays — we stream your original file while we build the optimized versions behind it. But there’s one case worth knowing about: a viewer who starts watching during that window, and stays on the page as conversion finishes, can have playback stop partway. A page reload fixes it, and this article explains why.

The two stages

1. Passthrough playback (immediately). Whatever file is the source of your video — a Library upload, or a video at a YouTube, Vimeo, S3, Wasabi, or WordPress Media Library URL — is what viewers get while we optimize. Nothing to configure; it just plays.

2. Optimized playback (once conversion finishes). We swap in our own encoded versions, delivered from our CDN. A video usually converts in about as long as it runs, so a 10-minute video takes about 10 minutes, and longer when our encoders are busy. To check where a video stands, see How do I know SmartVideo is working?

Why a video shared right after upload can stop partway

When conversion finishes, the converted copy replaces the original, and we remove the original file. That’s the right thing for storage, but it has one visible side effect: a viewer who started watching during passthrough is still playing the original file. The moment it’s removed, whatever that viewer’s nearest CDN server hadn’t already cached is gone, so playback stops at a point partway through and won’t continue.

Three things give this away:

  • It only affects a video that was shared or watched within the conversion window, not videos that were already ready.
  • It stops at a particular timestamp, rather than stalling and recovering the way a slow connection does.
  • Reloading the page plays the video straight through, because the reload picks up the converted copy.

That reload is the whole fix. Nothing is broken, the video does not need re-uploading, and the problem cannot recur for that video once it’s converted.

How to avoid it

  • Let conversion finish before you announce the video. If you’re publishing a lecture, a lesson, or a launch video, upload it ahead of time and confirm it’s converted before you send people to the page. Allow more lead time for long videos — a feature-length upload is a long conversion.
  • If someone is already watching and it stops, tell them to reload. One refresh, and they’re on the converted copy.
  • Upload in advance as a habit for anything long. Course platforms in particular tend to publish a lesson the moment it’s uploaded; adding a short gap between upload and publish removes this entirely.

If playback still stops after a reload

Then it isn’t this, and we want to see it. Email support@swarmify.com with the page URL, the video, the timestamp where it stops, and the viewer’s device and browser.

Two other things that get reported as “the video stopped”:

  • It never starts at all during optimization. Usually the source file isn’t in a format suited to web delivery (which is much of why a service like ours exists), or the source URL doesn’t allow video to be streamed from it — most likely with storage providers like Dropbox or Google Drive. If it takes a long time but eventually plays, it’s the format. If it never plays, it’s the source.
  • It jumps ahead instead of stopping. That’s usually the player’s double-tap seek gesture — see Why does my video jump forward 10 seconds?

Keep your own master copies regardless of any of this: SmartVideo stores a delivery-ready encode, not your original. See Video backup best practices
