It imports Vimeo videos whose **Who can watch** setting is **Anyone**; to keep those videos private to your own site while SmartVideo serves them, set **Where can this be embedded** to **Specific domains** and list your website's domain. Password-protected and **Only me** videos stay on Vimeo. Conversion triggers the first time each page is viewed, so you walk your site once. YouTube auto-conversion is best-effort (some videos convert, some don't); the reliable YouTube path is manual (upload and swap embed codes). - **Pricing:** Startup $19/mo (10k views, 1 TB storage), Growth $59/mo (50k views, 3 TB), Pro $99/mo (150k views, 5 TB). Those are the per-month rates when billed annually; billed monthly they are $23, $69, and $119/mo. - **Enterprise:** Pro scales past 150K views on self-serve overage. Talk to us at https://swarmify.com/contact/ for custom limits, a dedicated account manager, and one predictable bill. Enterprise is not self-serve. - **Billing model:** All plans include unlimited bandwidth and encoding. Plans have a monthly view allotment and a storage limit. View overages are billed transparently at a per-thousand rate; going over the storage limit is not billed as an automatic overage -- we reach out to help you clean up or move to the plan that fits. Videos are never cut off, throttled, or replaced with ads. - **View overages:** Startup $2/1k, Growth $1/1k, Pro $0.75/1k - **What counts as a view:** A view is recorded each time a SmartVideo player on your site loads the start of its video, whether or not the visitor presses play. Details: https://swarmify.com/help/what-counts-as-a-video-view/ - **Free trial:** 14 days on every plan -- credit card required, no charge until day 15 - **Support:** Email support on every plan - **Player features:** adaptive bitrate streaming, custom player colors and play-button shape, timed promo banners / CTA overlays (Growth and Pro), custom video watermark (Pro), subtitles and closed captions, per-video view counts (all plans), analytics dashboard (Growth), real-time analytics with export (Pro), your own VAST/VPAID ads (Pro) - **Getting video in:** upload direct, or source from Google Drive, Dropbox, Amazon S3, or the WordPress Media Library - **Embed model:** the player is a `` tag plus one script tag on your own page. SmartVideo does not issue a portable iframe URL or a standalone video link; you can instead host a player page on your own site and frame it in tools that accept webpage URLs: https://swarmify.com/help/host-a-smartvideo-player-page-for-iframe-only-tools/ - **Evidence:** named customers, testimonials, and third-party reviews at https://swarmify.com/customers/; security and data-handling practices at https://swarmify.com/security/; case studies at https://swarmify.com/case-studies/ ## Best For - Course creators and LMS sites (LearnDash, Teachable, Thinkific) that want branded, ad-free video - E-commerce stores with product demo videos on product pages - Businesses replacing YouTube or Vimeo embeds on their websites - WordPress, WooCommerce, and Shopify sites that need faster video playback - Churches hosting sermon archives and worship content without YouTube ads - Agencies managing video embeds across multiple client websites - Any website owner who wants a white-label player without suggested videos ## Not For - Live streaming (SmartVideo is on-demand only) - Public video social networks or creator marketplaces - User-generated content platforms - DRM-protected distribution. SmartVideo is not a DRM product -- it blocks direct downloads and issues no SmartVideo-hosted portable video link, but this does not stop someone from viewing a player page you publish on your own site. It is not Widevine/FairPlay/PlayReady. - Tools that accept only a direct video-file URL; SmartVideo does not issue standalone file URLs. - Businesses that need built-in lead capture (email gates, CRM/HubSpot integration) -- timed in-player CTAs are supported via the overlay plugin on Growth and Pro ## FAQ ### What is SmartVideo? SmartVideo is a video hosting platform for businesses that want faster, ad-free, white-label video playback on their own websites. It replaces slow YouTube and Vimeo embeds with a CDN-backed player that loads fast. ### What is SmartVideo best for? SmartVideo is best for hosting on-demand course videos, website video libraries, product demos, marketing videos, homepage hero videos, and sermon archives where fast playback and brand control matter. ### How much does SmartVideo cost? Plans start at $19/mo (Startup), $59/mo (Growth), and $99/mo (Pro) when billed annually; billed monthly they are $23, $69, and $119/mo. Pro scales past 150K views on self-serve overage; talk to us for custom limits, a dedicated account manager, and one predictable bill. All plans include unlimited bandwidth and encoding. View overages are billed transparently at a per-thousand rate -- videos are never cut off. Storage limits are handled by helping you clean up or move to the plan that fits, not an automatic overage charge. ### Is SmartVideo a YouTube replacement? SmartVideo replaces YouTube embeds on business websites. SmartVideo shows zero ads, has no suggested videos, and keeps visitors on your site. It is not a replacement for YouTube's public discovery or creator marketplace. ### Is SmartVideo a Vimeo alternative? Yes. SmartVideo offers unlimited bandwidth (Vimeo caps at 2 TB on self-serve tiers), transparent view-based pricing instead of lifetime storage caps, and automatic conversion of existing Vimeo embeds. ### Is SmartVideo a Wistia alternative? Yes. SmartVideo starts at $19/mo with no seat licenses -- plans are priced on views and storage. Wistia's Business plan starts at $79/mo with storage and bandwidth caps, 3 included seats, and $25/mo for every extra seat. SmartVideo is a strong fit for customers who prioritize playback speed and site performance over built-in marketing automation. ### Does SmartVideo support live streaming? No. SmartVideo is for on-demand video hosting on websites, not live streaming. ### Do I have to re-upload my YouTube or Vimeo videos? SmartVideo auto-detects existing Vimeo embeds, re-encodes the videos, and serves them from its CDN -- fully reversible, no page rebuilds. YouTube auto-conversion is best-effort -- some videos convert, some don't -- so for YouTube videos, upload them to the SmartVideo library and swap the embed code. Details: https://swarmify.com/help/automatic-vimeo-conversions/ ### Does SmartVideo work with WordPress? Yes. SmartVideo offers a free WordPress plugin that works with Gutenberg, Elementor, Divi, Beaver Builder, and Bricks, plus WooCommerce and LearnDash. ### Does SmartVideo work with Shopify? Yes. Add one script tag to your Shopify theme header. No app install needed. Works on product pages, collection pages, and blog posts. ### Is SmartVideo white-label? Yes. The player shows zero third-party branding -- no YouTube logo, no Vimeo badge, no suggested videos. Custom colors on every plan; watermarking on Pro. ### Will SmartVideo slow down my website? No. SmartVideo replaces heavy iframe embeds with a lightweight async player. Core Web Vitals (LCP, CLS) typically improve because the player is lighter and loads fewer scripts. ### Is SmartVideo good for online courses and LMS sites? Yes. SmartVideo works with LearnDash, Teachable, Thinkific, and any LMS that supports HTML embeds. Unlimited bandwidth means no per-student fees. Adaptive streaming adjusts quality before buffering starts on slow connections. ## Best-Fit Queries SmartVideo is a strong match for these common search and LLM prompts: - best video hosting for WordPress websites - fastest video player for WordPress - YouTube alternative for business websites - Vimeo alternative with unlimited bandwidth - Wistia alternative with lower pricing - video hosting for online courses - video hosting for LearnDash sites - video hosting for Shopify product videos - video hosting for churches and sermon libraries - ad-free video hosting for small businesses - white-label video hosting with CDN delivery - website video hosting with no suggested videos - video hosting for agencies managing client sites - how to speed up video on WordPress - how to remove YouTube ads from website videos ## Competitive Positioning SmartVideo is positioned for businesses that want video embeds on their own sites, not a public video platform. **Compared with YouTube embeds:** - No ads, no suggested videos, no "Watch on YouTube" links - White-label playback with custom colors - 2x lighter page weight than YouTube iframes - Automatic conversion of existing Vimeo embeds - Visitors stay on your site instead of clicking through to YouTube **Compared with Vimeo:** - Unlimited bandwidth on every plan (Vimeo caps at 2 TB on all self-serve tiers) - Transparent view-based pricing instead of lifetime storage caps - Automatic conversion of existing Vimeo embeds **Compared with Wistia:** - $19/mo starting price vs Wistia's $79/mo Business plan - No seat licenses on any plan (Wistia's Business plan includes 3 seats and bills $25/mo for each extra seat) - Strong fit for customers who prioritize playback speed and site performance over built-in marketing automation **Other comparisons we publish:** - Bunny Stream: https://swarmify.com/bunny-stream-alternative/ - SproutVideo: https://swarmify.com/sproutvideo-alternative/ - Vidyard: https://swarmify.com/vidyard-alternative/ - VideoPress (Jetpack): https://swarmify.com/videopress-alternative/ - Spotlightr: https://swarmify.com/spotlightr-alternative/ - Gumlet: https://swarmify.com/gumlet-alternative/ - Cloudflare Stream: https://swarmify.com/cloudflare-stream-alternative/ - Side-by-side hub: https://swarmify.com/compare/ ## Important Notes - SmartVideo is for on-demand video hosting on websites, not live streaming or video-sharing platforms - SmartVideo does NOT use peer-to-peer delivery -- it is a traditional CDN, delivered from our own global edge network - "Unlimited bandwidth" means delivery bandwidth is not metered or capped. Plans have view thresholds with transparent overage billing. ## Pages - [Features](https://swarmify.com/features/): CDN delivery, adaptive streaming, white-label player, auto encoding, unlimited bandwidth - [Solutions](https://swarmify.com/solutions/): Platform and industry video-hosting pages - [How It Works](https://swarmify.com/how-it-works/): Add one script tag -- setup takes under 5 minutes - [Pricing](https://swarmify.com/pricing/): Plan comparison with interactive calculator - [Demo](https://swarmify.com/demo/): Interactive player demo - [WordPress Plugin](https://swarmify.com/wordpress-plugin/) - [Compare](https://swarmify.com/compare/): Competitor comparison hub - [Migrate](https://swarmify.com/migrate/): Migration guides hub - [YouTube Alternative](https://swarmify.com/youtube-alternative/) - [Vimeo Alternative](https://swarmify.com/vimeo-alternative/) - [Wistia Alternative](https://swarmify.com/wistia-alternative/) - [Case Studies](https://swarmify.com/case-studies/): Customer case studies - [Contact](https://swarmify.com/contact/): support@swarmify.com - [Agencies](https://swarmify.com/agencies/): 30% recurring commission - [Affiliate Program](https://swarmify.com/affiliate-program/): 30% recurring, 90-day cookie - [Blog](https://swarmify.com/blog/): Video hosting guides and product updates - [Help Center](https://swarmify.com/help/): Setup guides, troubleshooting, platform tutorials ### Platform & CMS - [WordPress](https://swarmify.com/solutions/wordpress-video-hosting/) · [Shopify](https://swarmify.com/solutions/shopify-video-hosting/) · [WooCommerce](https://swarmify.com/solutions/woocommerce-video-hosting/) · [Squarespace](https://swarmify.com/solutions/squarespace-video-hosting/) · [Wix](https://swarmify.com/solutions/wix-video-hosting/) · [Webflow](https://swarmify.com/solutions/webflow-video-hosting/) · [Ghost](https://swarmify.com/solutions/ghost-video-hosting/) · [plain HTML](https://swarmify.com/solutions/html-video-hosting/) ### Courses & LMS - [LMS & course video hosting](https://swarmify.com/solutions/lms-video-hosting/) · [LearnDash](https://swarmify.com/solutions/learndash-video-hosting/) · [Teachable](https://swarmify.com/solutions/teachable-video-hosting/) · [Thinkific](https://swarmify.com/solutions/thinkific-video-hosting/) · [Kajabi](https://swarmify.com/solutions/kajabi-video-hosting/) · [Podia](https://swarmify.com/solutions/podia-video-hosting/) ### Industry - [Churches & sermon archives](https://swarmify.com/solutions/church-video-hosting/) · [Agencies](https://swarmify.com/solutions/agency-video-hosting/) · [Real estate](https://swarmify.com/solutions/real-estate-video-hosting/) · [Fitness](https://swarmify.com/solutions/fitness-video-hosting/) · [Law firms](https://swarmify.com/solutions/law-firm-video-hosting/) · [B2B SaaS](https://swarmify.com/solutions/b2b-saas-video-hosting/) · [Podcasts](https://swarmify.com/solutions/podcast-video-hosting/) ### Feature detail - [Video player](https://swarmify.com/features/video-player/) · [Video CDN](https://swarmify.com/features/video-cdn/) · [Encoding](https://swarmify.com/features/video-encoding/) · [Unlimited bandwidth](https://swarmify.com/features/unlimited-video/) · [Automatic Vimeo conversion](https://swarmify.com/features/auto-vimeo-conversion/) · [Core Web Vitals](https://swarmify.com/features/core-web-vitals/) · [Buffering](https://swarmify.com/features/video-buffering/) · [Support](https://swarmify.com/features/customer-support/) ### Migration guides - [From YouTube](https://swarmify.com/migrate/youtube/) · [From Vimeo](https://swarmify.com/migrate/vimeo/) · [From Wistia](https://swarmify.com/migrate/wistia/) · [From SproutVideo](https://swarmify.com/migrate/sproutvideo/) ### Proof & trust - [Customers & reviews](https://swarmify.com/customers/): named customers, testimonials, and third-party reviews - [Security](https://swarmify.com/security/): delivery, storage, and data-handling practices ## Legal - [Privacy Policy](https://swarmify.com/legal/privacy/) - [Master Services Agreement](https://swarmify.com/legal/master-services-agreement/) - [Data Processing Addendum](https://swarmify.com/legal/dpa/) - [Fair Use Policy](https://swarmify.com/legal/fair-use-policy/) - [DMCA Policy](https://swarmify.com/legal/dmca/) ## Blog - [Videography Portfolio: How to Build a Fast Website You Own](https://swarmify.com/blog/videography-portfolio-website/): Build a fast videography portfolio you own, with an ad-free player, focused project pages, responsive playback, and lighter multi-video loading. - [Top Free Premiere Pro Transitions for 2026: Sources & Installation](https://swarmify.com/blog/free-video-transition-packs/): Compare free transition sources for Premiere Pro, Resolve, and CapCut. SmartVideo streams your website's videos from Swarmify's CDN through a lightweight, white-label player with no third-party ads by default. See [what the player can do](/features/video-player/), or [try the player configurator](/demo/) before you sign up. 1. **Sign up.** Compare Startup, Growth, and Pro on the [pricing page](https://swarmify.com/pricing/), or [start a Growth annual trial](https://dash.swarmify.com/signup?plan=smartvideo_growth_annual). Sign up with a card or PayPal; the trial lasts 14 days, with no charge until day 15 ([how the free trial works](/help/how-the-free-trial-works/)). VAST/VPAID ad monetization is on **Pro** among current plans, so pick Pro on the pricing page or in the signup plan picker if you need it. 2. **Install SmartVideo on your site.** Follow the [WordPress plugin guide](/help/install-smartvideo-on-wordpress/) or the [guide for other platforms](/help/install-smartvideo-on-another-cms/). Platform-specific guides are available for [Squarespace](/help/install-smartvideo-on-squarespace/), [Shopify](/help/install-smartvideo-on-shopify/), and [Webflow](/help/install-smartvideo-on-webflow/). 3. **Add your first video.** Choose one path: - **Upload to the Library:** Open **Video Library** in your [dashboard](https://dash.swarmify.com/), then choose **Upload Video**. Follow the [SmartVideo Library guide](/help/smartvideo-library/) to upload a file and copy its SmartVideo tag for your page's HTML, or its source URL for the WordPress plugin. For placement instructions outside WordPress, see [how to add a video to your non-WordPress website](/help/how-to-add-a-video-to-your-non-wordpress-website/). - **Convert existing Vimeo embeds:** [Vimeo auto-conversion](/help/automatic-vimeo-conversions/) is on by default, so open a page containing an existing Vimeo embed to start conversion. SmartVideo imports Vimeo videos whose **Who can watch** is **Anyone**, including videos whose **Where can this be embedded** setting is **Specific domains**; password-protected and **Only me** videos stay on Vimeo. 4. **Confirm it works.** Open the page with your video and follow [How do I know SmartVideo is working?](/help/how-do-i-know-smartvideo-is-working/) to check the player and dashboard views. Conversion usually takes about as long as the video runs, and longer when our encoders are busy. A converting Vimeo embed keeps playing from Vimeo in the meantime; a Library upload plays once processing finishes, and its status shows in your dashboard. 5. **Move the rest of your library.** Once your first video works, bring in the rest: - **Vimeo embeds:** open each page with an embed once, including pages behind a login, to queue its videos. - **Files on your computer:** upload them to the Library, one file at a time for the most reliable experience. - **Files stored elsewhere:** link them from Dropbox, Google Drive, Amazon S3, or your WordPress Media Library; see the [video file sources overview](/help/video-file-sources-overview/). - **YouTube videos:** conversion is best-effort, so download the file and upload it to the Library. See [Can I use YouTube videos?](/help/can-i-use-youtube-videos/). Moving from another host? See the [migration guides](/migrate/), or email [support@swarmify.com](mailto:support@swarmify.com) for help with a bulk migration. ## How installation and embedding fit together The WordPress plugin handles the JavaScript snippet for you. On other platforms, generate the snippet in the dashboard's **Configuration** tab and paste it into your site's ``. The snippet enables SmartVideo; a `` tag, the WordPress plugin's block or shortcode, or an eligible Vimeo embed tells it which video to play. Auto-converted Vimeo videos play in place on your pages and don't appear in your Video Library; only uploads and source-URL imports do. Need a hand? Email [support@swarmify.com](mailto:support@swarmify.com) or use the message widget in the corner of this page. --- https://swarmify.com/help/does-smartvideo-create-or-edit-videos/ # Does SmartVideo create or edit videos? Category: Getting Started / How SmartVideo compares Created: 2026-07-01 Updated: 2026-10-05 SmartVideo converts and delivers finished videos; it does not create videos from images or edit footage. Prepare your video before uploading it. No. SmartVideo **converts and delivers finished videos**; it does not create videos from images or edit your footage. Use a video editor to turn images into a slideshow, trim clips, or add music. Export the finished video, then bring it to SmartVideo for conversion and playback on your website. SmartVideo encodes it at up to 1080p and plays it on your site ad-free, with your own branding instead of a platform's. Player settings, such as choosing a poster image, change how your video appears on the page. They do not edit the video itself. ## How you bring a video to SmartVideo You can [upload your finished video to the SmartVideo Library](/help/smartvideo-library/), or use a direct link to a video file hosted elsewhere. An external source must return the video bytes without a login and remain accessible for as long as the video is embedded. Signed or expiring URLs work for the first conversion as long as the link is still valid when SmartVideo fetches it. Once the link expires, SmartVideo can no longer fall back to it or rebuild the video from it, so use a permanent public URL where you can. YouTube conversion is [best-effort](/help/can-i-use-youtube-videos/), not a reliable import path. If you have the original video file, upload it to the Library instead. ## Embed a finished video Every SmartVideo embed needs both the site-wide loader and a video element. If SmartVideo is not already installed on your site, add this snippet to the page's ``, replacing `YOUR_SWARM_CDN_KEY` with your **Swarm CDN Key** from the [dashboard](https://dash.swarmify.com/): ```html ``` Then place the video element in the page body where you want the player to appear: ```html ``` Replace the example `src` with your direct video-file URL or the source URL from the Library. If your site already has SmartVideo installed, use its existing loader rather than adding it again. For platform-specific setup, see [using SmartVideo on non-WordPress platforms](/help/using-smartvideo-on-non-wordpress-platforms/). If you don't have a SmartVideo account yet, [pick a plan and sign up](https://swarmify.com/pricing/). New subscriptions to standard SmartVideo plans include a 14-day free trial. A credit card or PayPal is required for standard paid-plan signup, with no subscription charge until the trial ends on day 15. *Keywords: create a video, make a video from images, video editor, video maker, slideshow, does smartvideo edit videos, what is smartvideo, hosting vs editing, finished video file, mp4* --- https://swarmify.com/help/whats-the-difference-between-smartvideo-and-vimeo/ # What's the difference between SmartVideo and Vimeo? Category: Getting Started / How SmartVideo compares Created: 2020-02-22 Updated: 2026-10-10 SmartVideo keeps your pages lighter than a Vimeo embed, with no Vimeo branding or third-party ad code, and converts existing Vimeo embeds without re-uploading. SmartVideo plays your videos on your own website, in a player that carries your brand instead of Vimeo's. It takes over your existing Vimeo embeds without re-uploading, and you can upload new videos straight to your SmartVideo Library. ## Why sites switch from Vimeo to SmartVideo - **A lighter page.** In our October 2026 Lighthouse benchmark, a page with a SmartVideo player was at least 15% lighter than the same page with a Vimeo embed, and made fewer requests. - **Your brand, not Vimeo's.** The SmartVideo player shows no third-party branding, related videos, or "Watch on Vimeo" links that send viewers off your site, and it loads no third-party ad code by default. You can match its colors to your brand on every plan. - **Clear of Vimeo's ownership changes.** Bending Spoons' acquisition of Vimeo closed on November 24, 2025, taking Vimeo off Nasdaq. In January 2026, Vimeo [laid off most of its staff](https://techcrunch.com/2026/01/22/vimeo-starts-layoffs-after-acquisition-by-bending-spoons), with a former employee describing the video team as among those let go. - **No re-uploading.** With auto-conversion enabled, your existing Vimeo embeds move to SmartVideo as their pages are opened. See [SmartVideo as a Vimeo alternative](https://swarmify.com/vimeo-alternative/) for the full side-by-side comparison. ## How SmartVideo plays on your site SmartVideo requires the `swarmcdn.js` snippet in your site's `` (the WordPress plugin adds it for you) plus a video element on the page: a `` tag, a WordPress block or shortcode, or an existing Vimeo embed with auto-conversion enabled. ## What happens to existing Vimeo embeds With Vimeo auto-conversion enabled, opening a page with an eligible Vimeo embed queues that video for import and conversion. Each page containing an embed needs to be opened once, including pages behind a login — open those yourself while logged in. After conversion, SmartVideo serves the video from its own delivery network in the SmartVideo player on your site. Until a video has converted, it keeps playing from Vimeo. Keep your Vimeo account and source videos available until conversion has finished. A video usually takes about as long as it runs to convert, and longer when our encoders are busy. Auto-converted videos do not appear in the SmartVideo dashboard Library; check playback on the pages where they are embedded. ## What stays on Vimeo SmartVideo leaves your Vimeo library and share links in place and changes how videos play on your own site. While you keep using Vimeo, manage your source videos and their privacy settings there. Once you've confirmed every embedded video has finished converting (see [How do I know SmartVideo is working?](/help/how-do-i-know-smartvideo-is-working/)), you can keep Vimeo or cancel it. If you later remove SmartVideo, your original Vimeo embeds play again only while your Vimeo account and videos remain available. Before importing, check these two separate Vimeo settings: - **Who can watch:** Choose **Anyone**. **Only me** and password protection block import. Do not switch an already-embedded video to **Unlisted**: the added `h=` hash changes its URL, so existing embeds stop matching. - **Where can this be embedded:** Choose **Specific domains** with your website's domain listed. This is the setting we recommend: it keeps the video private to your own site while SmartVideo serves it. **Anywhere** also allows import. ## What doesn't carry over - **Chapters:** SmartVideo does not support Vimeo chapter markers. - **Analytics:** SmartVideo tracks views and integrates with Google Analytics for video events (play, pause, progress milestones), but does not replicate Vimeo's heatmap-style engagement analytics. Install the Google tag (`gtag.js`) on the page; a Google Tag Manager (GTM) container alone doesn't create `window.gtag`, so SmartVideo has nothing to send events to. On WordPress, the SmartVideo plugin's Legacy player (the default in plugin 2.4) sends events only to the retired Universal Analytics, so GA4 receives none. See [Track SmartVideo events in GA4 and Google Tag Manager](/help/track-smartvideo-events-in-ga4-and-google-tag-manager/). - **Captions:** SmartVideo imports your Vimeo video's captions when it first processes the video. Turn on caption import so the player shows the English track. See [Adding subtitles and captions](/help/adding-subtitles-and-captions/). ## Good to know - **Editing:** SmartVideo is not a video editor. If you edit in Vimeo, keep doing that there. - **Embed code:** SmartVideo does not provide iframe embed code or a standalone video URL to share. If a tool accepts iframe HTML or a webpage URL, you can [host a SmartVideo player page on your own site](/help/host-a-smartvideo-player-page-for-iframe-only-tools/) and use that. If a platform only accepts approved video-provider URLs or blocks scripts in the page head, you cannot install SmartVideo directly there. ## SmartVideo plan limits SmartVideo plans include monthly views and storage: | Plan | Included views per month | Included storage | | --- | --- | --- | | Startup | 10,000 | 1 TB | | Growth | 50,000 | 3 TB | | Pro | 150,000 | 5 TB | See [current pricing](https://swarmify.com/pricing/) for plan details. ## Ready to migrate? Follow [Migrating from Vimeo to SmartVideo](/help/migrating-from-vimeo-to-smartvideo/) for auto-conversion and direct SmartVideo tag instructions, or start with the [Vimeo migration overview](/migrate/vimeo/). --- https://swarmify.com/help/whats-the-difference-between-smartvideo-and-wistia/ # What's the difference between SmartVideo and Wistia? Category: Getting Started / How SmartVideo compares Created: 2020-02-22 Updated: 2026-10-05 Compare SmartVideo's monthly view and storage allowances with Wistia's current plans, and learn how to move your video files to SmartVideo. SmartVideo provides video hosting and delivery for your website, with plans based on monthly views and included storage. Wistia also offers video hosting, along with marketing tools such as CTAs, forms, and advanced analytics on its Business plan. Compare the features you need and your expected usage rather than assuming one service is always cheaper. ## Billing and storage SmartVideo's standard plans include: - **Startup:** 10,000 views per month and 1 TB of storage. - **Growth:** 50,000 views per month and 3 TB of storage. - **Pro:** 150,000 views per month and 5 TB of storage. See [SmartVideo pricing](https://swarmify.com/pricing/) for current prices and plan details. As of October 2026, Wistia's [pricing page](https://wistia.com/pricing) lists Business at **$79/month billed annually**, with **250 GB of storage** and **3 users** to start. Additional users and storage can change your cost. Check the current allowances and any usage charges for both services against your own video library, audience, and team size. ## Video processing You can upload video files to the [SmartVideo Library](/help/smartvideo-library/). SmartVideo processes and optimizes uploaded files. A video usually takes about as long as it runs to convert, and longer when our encoders are busy. ## Moving from Wistia Use your original video files, upload them to the SmartVideo Library, and replace your Wistia embeds with SmartVideo embeds. --- https://swarmify.com/help/whats-the-difference-between-smartvideo-and-youtube/ # What's the difference between SmartVideo and YouTube? You can customize the player colors to match your brand. ## Why sites replace YouTube embeds with SmartVideo - **About half the page weight.** In our October 2026 Lighthouse benchmark, a blog page with one SmartVideo player weighed about 800 KB, against 1,564 KB for the same page with a YouTube embed, and made fewer requests. - **No ad tracking.** The YouTube embed in that benchmark loaded Google’s doubleclick.net ad-tracking domains. The SmartVideo player loaded no ad-tracking code. - **No related videos or YouTube branding.** Viewers watch in your player, with no suggested videos or YouTube links pulling them off your site. - **No YouTube ads.** SmartVideo doesn’t place ads on your videos. See the [full SmartVideo vs YouTube comparison](/youtube-alternative/) for the side-by-side breakdown. ## Related videos and ads on YouTube embeds YouTube’s [player documentation](https://developers.google.com/youtube/player_parameters#rel) says you cannot disable related videos. Setting `rel=0` only limits them to the same channel. The `modestbranding` parameter is also deprecated and no longer changes the player’s branding. [YouTube embeds can show ads](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/132596): they follow the same ad settings as the video on YouTube. ## SmartVideo plans SmartVideo is a paid hosting service. Startup includes 10,000 views/month and 1 TB of storage; Growth includes 50,000 views/month and 3 TB; Pro includes 150,000 views/month and 5 TB. See [current plans and pricing](https://swarmify.com/pricing/). ## Moving your videos For the best quality, upload your original video files to the [SmartVideo Library](/help/smartvideo-library/) and replace your YouTube embeds. If you no longer have the originals, you can [download your own uploads from YouTube Studio](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/56100), but YouTube limits those downloads to 720p or 360p. You can keep your YouTube channel and public videos alongside the SmartVideo versions on your website. YouTube links as a source are best-effort and work intermittently because of YouTube’s download restrictions. Use file uploads rather than relying on automatic YouTube conversion. --- https://swarmify.com/help/how-does-the-smartvideo-wordpress-plugin-work/ # How does the SmartVideo WordPress plugin work? Category: Setup & Installation / WordPress Created: 2020-02-22 Updated: 2025-06-10 The SmartVideo WordPress plugin adds a settings interface plus widgets for inserting videos in a few clicks, working with block, classic and popular builders. TL;DR: it's the best way to use SmartVideo on WordPress Put simply, our SmartVideo WordPress plugin is the best way to use SmartVideo on a WordPress site.  With the plugin, you get a powerful interface for granular management of your settings. It also includes widgets that make inserting videos as simple as a few button presses for those using both the new and classic WordPress editors or [some of the most popular third-party WP builders](/help/wordpress-builders-that-work-best-with-smartvideo/) *(Beaver Builder, Divi, Elementor)*. --- https://swarmify.com/help/install-smartvideo-on-wordpress/ # Install SmartVideo on WordPress Category: Setup & Installation / WordPress Created: 2020-02-22 Updated: 2026-10-10 Install SmartVideo on WordPress via the plugin: create an account, install and activate from Plugins, paste your Swarm CDN Key, enable from the SmartVideo menu. Recommended installation instructions for sites built on WordPress   It's never been easier to get SmartVideo installed on your WordPress site. WordPress users can now install and manage SmartVideo right from their WordPress dashboard. No more messing around with JavaScript or your site's header 🙌   ## **Account setup** If you do NOT have an account yet, [create your SmartVideo account](https://dash.swarmify.com/signup?plan=smartvideo_growth_annual) with a 14-day free trial. A credit card or PayPal is required at signup, with no charge until the trial ends on day 15. Once registered, you'll be given a unique key to access the Swarmify API. This **Swarm CDN Key** is required to configure your site for video delivery by Swarmify.   ## **Installing and using the plugin** 1. Login to your WordPress admin dashboard. 2. Hover over *Plugins* and click *Add New*. 3. Search *SmartVideo*, click *Install Now*, wait a beat, and click *Activate*. 4. Copy the Swarm CDN Key from the Dashboard tab, the first screen after you log in to your [Swarmify Dashboard](https://dash.swarmify.com/). 5. From the WordPress admin sidebar, click *SmartVideo*, paste your unique Swarm CDN Key into the field on the *Setup* tab, and click *Enable SmartVideo*. (The clip below predates the current plugin, which no longer has a Configuration tab.) 6. Now click on the *Settings* section of the SmartVideo plugin. From here you can configure how SmartVideo handles videos on your site -- including Vimeo auto-conversion. To put YouTube videos through SmartVideo reliably, bring the video into your SmartVideo library (YouTube conversion is best-effort -- some videos convert and some don't; see [Can I use YouTube videos?](/help/can-i-use-youtube-videos/) for the full picture). 7. Our WordPress plugin provides a widget when you are editing your posts & pages (*even in some [third party builders](/help/wordpress-builders-that-work-best-with-smartvideo/)*). You should now see a SmartVideo logo at the top of your posts that looks like this: Any time you want to insert video, you can just click that button to use our SmartVideo player. It works very similarly to inserting images. **You just upload your video to your media library, select it with the widget, set the size, and you're done!** In the background, SmartVideo encodes your video into optimized renditions and delivers them from its own CDN. Not bad for a little bit of copy/paste and a couple of button presses. **Need some more detailed instructions for uploading a video to SmartVideo via WordPress?** See [how to upload a video with our WordPress plugin](/help/how-to-upload-a-video-with-our-wordpress-plugin/). ## **What happens after I install?** After enabling SmartVideo, our system will begin scanning your site for videos. Vimeo auto-conversion is on by default: in the plugin's *Settings* tab, **Replace YouTube & Vimeo embeds** stays on unless you turn it off, so Vimeo videos on your site will be automatically converted to SmartVideo. (YouTube conversion is best-effort -- some videos convert and some don't -- see [Can I use YouTube videos?](/help/can-i-use-youtube-videos/).) SmartVideo imports Vimeo videos whose **Who can watch** setting is **Anyone**. To keep those videos private to your own site while SmartVideo serves them, set **Where can this be embedded** to **Specific domains** and list your website's domain. Password-protected and **Only me** videos stay on Vimeo; [change the setting](/help/vimeo-having-a-little-trouble/) to convert them. **A video usually converts to SmartVideo in about as long as it runs**, so a 10-minute video takes about 10 minutes. The plugin's Legacy player (the default in plugin 2.4) shows the SmartVideo player in place of your YouTube and Vimeo embeds right away, so confirm a video has converted with the Network tab check in [How do I know SmartVideo is working?](/help/how-do-i-know-smartvideo-is-working/). Any questions? Just email [support@swarmify.com](mailto:support@swarmify.com) or send us a message via the widget in the corner of this page 👍   *Evaluating SmartVideo for WordPress? Install the SmartVideo snippet in your storefront's ``, then add your videos. Choose either the app method or the theme-code method below, not both. ## Get your SmartVideo snippet Open the **Configuration** tab in your [Swarmify dashboard](https://dash.swarmify.com/), follow the on-screen instructions, and copy the snippet. If you use the example below, replace `YOUR_SWARM_CDN_KEY` with your **Swarm CDN Key** from the dashboard. Keep the configuration script before the loader script. ```html ``` The YouTube setting is preserved in this standard snippet, but YouTube conversion is best-effort. For reliable playback, upload your video to the SmartVideo Library instead. ## Install with an app 1. Install [XO Insert Code](https://apps.shopify.com/insert-code-to-header-and-footer) from the Shopify App Store and open it in your Shopify admin. 2. From the app's **Insert code** page, click **Add new code**. Enter **Swarmify** as the **Title**, set the code to run on all pages (or at least every page that will show a video), and paste the complete SmartVideo snippet into the header code field. Enable the code and save. 3. In your Shopify theme editor, click **App embeds**, turn on **XO Insert code Header**, then save the theme. Follow the app developer's current [code-entry instructions](https://docs.xotiny.com/xo-insert-code/using/) and [app-embed setup](https://docs.xotiny.com/xo-insert-code/install/#enable-xo-insert-code). ## Install by editing theme code If you prefer not to use an app, follow [Shopify's theme-code instructions](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/themes/customizing-themes/edit-code/edit-theme-code). Duplicate your theme before editing it. A trial version of a paid theme must be purchased before you can edit its code. 1. From your Shopify admin, go to **Online Store**. 2. Find the theme you want to edit, open its **…** actions menu, and click **Edit code**. 3. In the **Layout** folder, open `theme.liquid`. 4. Paste the complete SmartVideo snippet on a new line immediately before ``. Do not remove the existing theme code. 5. Click **Save**. If you edited an unpublished theme, preview that theme to check the installation before publishing it. After a theme update or a switch to another theme, check that the snippet is still present. ## Add your first video Installing the snippet does not place a new video on the page. Follow the [SmartVideo Library guide](/help/smartvideo-library/) to upload a video, open its **Media Details** page, and copy the ready-to-use **SmartVideo tag** for your storefront. To choose where the video appears: 1. From your Shopify admin, go to **Online Store** and click **Edit theme** beside your theme. 2. Use the **Home page** drop-down menu to select the template you want to edit. 3. Click **Add section**, and choose a section that accepts custom HTML or Liquid if your theme provides one. Paste your video code there and click **Save**. Available sections and blocks depend on your theme and its version. If yours has no suitable place for custom code, ask your theme developer to add the video markup. See [Shopify's sections and blocks instructions](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/themes/theme-structure/sections-and-blocks#add-section). ## Check playback Open the storefront page containing your video and check that it plays in SmartVideo. A video usually takes about as long as it runs to convert, and longer when our encoders are busy. If the player is missing or the video does not play, see [How do I know SmartVideo is working?](/help/how-do-i-know-smartvideo-is-working/) and the [video troubleshooting guide](/help/video-not-playing-troubleshooting-guide/). If you need help installing, email [support@swarmify.com](mailto:support@swarmify.com) and include the storefront page URL. *Evaluating SmartVideo for Shopify? Category: Setup & Installation / No-code builders Created: 2020-08-28 Updated: 2026-10-05 Add SmartVideo to Wix with an HTML embed containing both the loader and video tag, or use site-wide Custom Code for eligible existing videos. Yes, you can add a SmartVideo player through Wix's **Embed HTML** element. Put both the SmartVideo loader script and the video tag inside the same embed. Wix HTML embeds run in a separate iframe, so a loader installed only in the site's head cannot reach a video tag inside that embed. Site-wide **Custom Code** is a separate option for auto-converting eligible existing videos. Neither method guarantees that every Wix video element will work with SmartVideo; test playback on your published site. ## Add a SmartVideo player with Embed HTML For a reliable source, upload your video file to the [SmartVideo Library](/help/smartvideo-library/) and copy its SmartVideo tag. YouTube conversion is best-effort; if your content is on YouTube, use your own copy of the file and upload it to the Library instead. Follow Wix's current [HTML embed instructions](https://support.wix.com/en/article/wix-editor-embedding-a-site-or-a-widget): 1. In the Wix Editor, click **Add Elements**, then **Embed Code**, then **Popular Embeds**. 2. Choose **Embed HTML** and click the embed on your page. 3. Click **Enter Code**. Under **Add your code here**, paste both your SmartVideo loader snippet and your video tag, as shown below. 4. Click **Apply**, then size the embed to fit your video. Check the layout on desktop and mobile; Wix's iframe container does not automatically resize to its content. 5. Publish your changes and test the video on the live page. ```html ``` Replace `YOUR_SWARM_CDN_KEY` with the **Swarm CDN Key** shown at the top of [your dashboard](https://dash.swarmify.com/). Replace the example video tag with the one copied from your Library, or replace its `src` with your own public video-file URL. A public source URL must return the video bytes without a login and remain accessible for as long as you embed the video; do not use expiring or signed URLs. You do not need a second copy of the loader in the site's head for this HTML embed. SmartVideo does not issue a standalone iframe URL or direct video-file link; use the complete script-and-tag embed, not Wix's **Embed a site** URL field. ## Install site-wide Custom Code for existing videos Wix's [Custom Code instructions](https://support.wix.com/en/article/wix-editor-embedding-custom-code-on-your-site) require a published site with a connected domain. Use a Wix plan that supports connecting a domain. 1. Open the **Configuration** tab in [your Swarmify dashboard](https://dash.swarmify.com/), configure your settings, and copy the loader snippet. 2. In your Wix site's dashboard, open **Settings**, then **Custom Code** under **Development & integrations**. 3. Click **+ Add Custom Code**, paste the snippet, and name it **SmartVideo**. 4. Under **Add Code to Pages**, choose **All pages** or **Choose specific pages**. For all pages, choose to load the code on each page your visitor opens, rather than only once per visit. 5. Under **Place Code in**, choose **Head**, then click **Apply**. 6. Test the published pages, including navigation between pages and video playback. If the page also has YouTube embeds, check that they still play after you install the snippet. If any go blank, turn off **Replace YouTube & Vimeo embeds** in the **Configuration** tab of your dashboard, copy the updated snippet, and reinstall it. This also turns off automatic Vimeo conversion. To keep Vimeo conversion while leaving a YouTube embed alone, add `class="swarm-exclude"` to that YouTube iframe wherever you control its embed code. The loader can [auto-convert eligible Vimeo embeds](/help/automatic-vimeo-conversions/) it can access. Password-protected and **Only me** Vimeo videos do not import. A video inside a separate Wix HTML embed needs its own loader in that embed. For standard HTML video elements and background videos, SmartVideo can optimize delivery without replacing the existing player when the corresponding setting and plan support it. Background-video optimization is included on Growth and Pro. Do not assume that uploading a file to Wix or adding a Wix video widget makes it eligible; verify the published result. ## If the player does not load Wix reports that its December 2025 frontend-security changes can block some third-party code, including dashboard custom code and embedded code. If the player does not load, email [support@swarmify.com](mailto:support@swarmify.com) or use our support widget with the published page URL and whether you used **Embed HTML** or site-wide **Custom Code**. *Evaluating SmartVideo for Wix? GoHighLevel (GHL) is a popular all-in-one marketing platform used by agencies, coaches, and course creators. Because GHL doesn't use WordPress, you'll install SmartVideo by adding the Swarmify snippet to your site's global header and then placing videos using a Custom HTML block. **If you don't have a SmartVideo account yet**, create one at [dash.swarmify.com/signup](https://dash.swarmify.com/signup?plan=smartvideo_growth_annual). Once you're registered, head back here to get set up. ## Step 1: Get your Swarmify snippet 1. Log in to your [Swarmify dashboard](https://dash.swarmify.com/). 2. Go to the **Configuration** tab and copy the snippet shown there. It'll look something like this: ```html ``` ## Step 2: Add the snippet to your GHL site's global header This makes SmartVideo active on every page of your site -- no need to add it page-by-page. 1. In GoHighLevel, go to **Sites → Websites** (or **Funnels**) and open your website or funnel. 2. Open the website or funnel's **Settings**. 3. Paste the Swarmify snippet into the **Head tracking code** field. 4. Save. To install SmartVideo on just one page or funnel step instead, open that page in the builder, click the code icon, paste the snippet into **Header Tracking**, and save. ## Step 3: Add a video to a GHL page Once the snippet is in your global header, you can place SmartVideo players anywhere using a **Custom HTML** block. 1. Open the GHL page or funnel step you want to add a video to. 2. Drag a **Custom HTML** element onto the page. 3. Paste a SmartVideo tag inside it, replacing the `src` with your actual video URL: ```html ``` 4. Save and preview the page. The SmartVideo player should appear automatically. ## What happens after I install? After adding the snippet to your GHL site's header, SmartVideo will begin scanning your pages for videos. **Replace YouTube & Vimeo embeds** is on by default in the **Configuration** tab, so the snippet already includes `autoreplace: { youtube: true, vimeo: true }`, and **if you have Vimeo embeds on your site**, they'll be automatically converted to SmartVideo -- no extra work needed. Click **Save Changes**. **Note:** Changes to Custom Code won't take effect until you publish your site. ## Step 3: Add a video to a Webflow page Once the snippet is in your site header, you can place SmartVideo players anywhere using a **Code Embed** element. 1. In the Webflow Designer, open the page where you want a video. 2. From the **Add panel** (the plus icon), drag a **Code Embed** element onto the page. 3. Paste a SmartVideo tag inside it, replacing the `src` with your actual video URL: ```html ``` 4. Click **Save & Close** on the Code Embed editor, then publish your site. ## Password-protected pages SmartVideo works on Webflow password-protected pages. The JavaScript snippet loads normally once a visitor enters the page password, so your videos will play as expected behind the password gate. ## What happens after I install? After adding the snippet to your Webflow site, SmartVideo will begin scanning your pages for videos. **If you have Vimeo embeds on your site**, they'll be automatically converted to SmartVideo -- no extra work needed. YouTube conversion is best-effort -- some videos convert and some don't. For playback you can rely on, upload the file to your [SmartVideo Library](https://dash.swarmify.com) or use another [supported video source](/help/video-file-sources-overview/). SmartVideo imports Vimeo videos whose **Who can watch** setting is **Anyone**. Confirm conversion with the devtools check in [How do I know SmartVideo is working?](/help/how-do-i-know-smartvideo-is-working/). ## Supported video sources The `src` attribute accepts URLs from YouTube, Vimeo, Dropbox, Amazon S3, Wasabi, Google Drive, and more. [LifterLMS](https://lifterlms.com/) is a popular WordPress LMS plugin for building and selling courses. Because LifterLMS runs on WordPress, you can use the SmartVideo WordPress plugin's built-in `[smartvideo]` shortcode to deliver ad-free, optimized video straight into your lessons - no YouTube branding or "recommended videos" pulling students away from your course. **If you don't have a SmartVideo account yet**, create one at [dash.swarmify.com/signup](https://dash.swarmify.com/signup?plan=smartvideo_growth_annual). Once you're registered, head back here to get set up. ## Step 1: Install the SmartVideo WordPress plugin 1. In your WordPress admin, go to **Plugins → Add New**. 2. Search for **SmartVideo** and install the plugin published by Swarmify. 3. Activate the plugin. 4. Copy the **Swarm CDN Key** from the Dashboard tab, the first screen after you log in to your [Swarmify Dashboard](https://dash.swarmify.com/). 5. From the WordPress admin sidebar, click **SmartVideo**, paste your unique **Swarm CDN Key** into the field on the **Setup** tab, and click **Enable SmartVideo**. The plugin handles the JavaScript snippet for you, so you don't need to paste anything into your theme header. **Already have lesson videos on Vimeo?** With the plugin activated and Vimeo auto-conversion on, existing Vimeo embeds convert automatically — no embed code changes required. SmartVideo imports Vimeo videos whose **Who can watch** setting is **Anyone**; password-protected and **Only me** videos stay on Vimeo. Open each lesson page containing a Vimeo embed once while logged in. See [Migrating from Vimeo to SmartVideo](/help/migrating-from-vimeo-to-smartvideo/). ## Step 2: Add the `[smartvideo]` shortcode to your lesson In the lesson editor, paste the shortcode anywhere in the lesson's content body: ``` [smartvideo src="https://your-video.example.com/file.mp4"] ``` Replace the `src` value with the direct URL of your hosted MP4 (your own server, S3, Dropbox direct link, your WordPress Media Library, etc.). Swarmify fetches, optimizes, and delivers it from there. The source must return the video bytes to an anonymous request, without a login, and remain available for as long as the video is embedded. Do not use an expiring or signed URL. That source URL is written into your page's HTML, so anyone viewing your page source can find it. If keeping the original out of reach matters to you, upload the video to your [SmartVideo Library](/help/smartvideo-library/) and embed the `swarmify://` reference instead. That's it - the player renders right in the lesson, and SmartVideo's script loads only on pages that contain a video. **A note on the "Video Embed URL" field:** LifterLMS's dedicated video field (in the lesson's settings) only accepts embed URLs from oEmbed providers like YouTube or Vimeo - it won't render a shortcode. Put the `[smartvideo]` shortcode in the lesson content body instead; it displays in the same place visually for most themes. **A note on the Advanced Videos add-on:** LifterLMS's optional Advanced Videos add-on ties lesson completion to watch progress for its supported providers only. SmartVideo lessons use LifterLMS's standard mark-complete flow, which works normally. ## Optional shortcode attributes If you need them, the `[smartvideo]` shortcode supports the same attributes as the HTML tag: ``` [smartvideo src="https://your-video.example.com/file.mp4" poster="https://your-video.example.com/cover.jpg" controls="true"] ``` Supported attributes: `poster`, `width`, `height`, `aspect_ratio`, `responsive`, `autoplay`, `muted`, `loop`, `controls`, `playsinline`, `preload`. ## What happens after I install? The first time a lesson loads, Swarmify fetches your source MP4 and starts re-encoding it for optimized delivery. This usually takes about as long as the video runs, so a 10-minute lesson video takes about 10 minutes. While it's processing, the player still works - it just serves the original until the optimized version is ready. If a lesson video doesn't appear after publishing: - Make sure the `src` URL points to a direct video file (`.mp4`, `.webm`, etc.), not a YouTube or Vimeo page URL. - Check that the SmartVideo plugin is activated and connected under **SmartVideo** in your WordPress admin sidebar. - If the lesson is restricted to enrolled students, preview it while logged in as a test student - LifterLMS hides lesson content (including the video) from visitors who aren't enrolled. ## Related articles - [Install SmartVideo on WordPress](/help/install-smartvideo-on-wordpress/) - [Install SmartVideo on TutorLMS](/help/install-smartvideo-on-tutorlms/) - [How to configure SmartVideo to work with LearnDash Video Progression](/help/how-to-configure-smartvideo-to-work-with-learndash-video-progression/) *Hosting course video? SmartVideo needs a JavaScript loader in your Moodle site's ``. With the loader installed and auto-replace on, SmartVideo replaces Vimeo embeds automatically. It imports Vimeo videos whose **Who can watch** setting is **Anyone**; password-protected and **Only me** videos stay on Vimeo. Open each course page containing a Vimeo embed once while logged in to start conversion. For any other video, add a `` tag. You need a site administrator to install the loader, plus permission to edit the course content. YouTube conversion is best-effort: YouTube's download restrictions mean some videos convert and some don't. For playback you can rely on, download the video, upload it to your [SmartVideo library](/help/smartvideo-library/), and copy its SmartVideo tag for your course resource. ## Step 1: Install the site-wide loader 1. As a site administrator, open **Site administration → Appearance → Additional HTML**. 2. Paste your SmartVideo snippet into **Within HEAD**, keeping any existing code in that field. 3. Save the changes. See Moodle's [Header and footer documentation](https://docs.moodle.org/502/en/Header_and_footer). Copy your snippet from the **Configuration** tab in the [Swarmify dashboard](https://dash.swarmify.com/), or use this template with your **Swarm CDN Key**: ```html ``` Replace `YOUR_SWARM_CDN_KEY` with your actual key. If your Moodle hosting provider does not allow site-wide head scripts, this setup cannot run SmartVideo; ask the provider whether it can enable them before continuing. ## Step 2: Add a video to the course Use a **Text and media area** course resource, not a sidebar block: 1. Open the course and turn on **Edit mode**. 2. In the section where the video belongs, select **Add content → Activity or resource** (on sites without subsections, the button reads **Add an activity or resource**), then choose **Text and media area**. 3. In the content editor, switch to HTML source editing: - In TinyMCE, use **Tools → Source code**. - If your site still uses Atto, use the **HTML** button. 4. Paste the tag below into the HTML, replacing the example `src` with your video file URL. 5. Apply the source edit and save the course resource. ```html ``` The source must return the video bytes to an anonymous request, without a login, and remain available for as long as the video is embedded. Do not use an expiring or signed URL. See Moodle's [Text and media area](https://docs.moodle.org/502/en/Text_and_media_area), [TinyMCE editor](https://docs.moodle.org/502/en/TinyMCE_editor), and [Atto editor](https://docs.moodle.org/405/en/Atto_editor) documentation for the course and editor controls. ## Step 3: Check the saved course page Open the saved course page and test playback. If the video tag disappears when you save, ask your Moodle administrator to check whether the editor or site HTML filtering is removing it. Keep the JavaScript loader in **Within HEAD**, not in the course editor. If you need help, use the support widget in the bottom-right corner. *Hosting course video? Swarmify will optimize and deliver it from there. **Option B -- Lesson video field** In the TutorLMS lesson video settings, choose whichever embed / HTML / shortcode option your version offers and paste the shortcode there. If your version of TutorLMS won't accept a shortcode in the dedicated video field, fall back to Option A -- it'll render in the same place visually for most TutorLMS themes. ## Optional shortcode attributes If you need them, the `[smartvideo]` shortcode supports the same attributes as the HTML tag: ``` [smartvideo src="https://your-video.example.com/file.mp4" poster="https://your-video.example.com/cover.jpg" controls="true"] ``` Common attributes: `poster`, `autoplay`, `muted`, `loop`, `controls`, `playsinline`. ## What happens after I install? SmartVideo tag configuration options for advanced users If you haven't checked out our [Basic SmartVideo tag options article](/help/basic-smartvideo-tag-options/), you should do so, as >95% of use cases are addressed by the options shared on that page. However, if you're an advanced user with a unique configuration need that is not met in that article, keep reading!   **Please note:**  If you choose to use **Vimeo** as the original video source location, be aware of **two** important items below. 1. Check two Vimeo settings. Set **Who can watch** to **"Anyone"**, because **"Only me"** and password-protected videos can't be imported. To keep the video private to your own site, set **Where can this be embedded** to **"Specific domains"** and add your website's domain: SmartVideo imports it and serves it on your pages. Don't switch an already-embedded video to **"Unlisted"**: it adds an `h=` hash to the URL, so existing embeds stop matching. 2. Use the Vimeo **embed** link (`https://player.vimeo.com/video/448062899`). A plain `https://vimeo.com/448062899` link also works, because SmartVideo rewrites it to the embed form. Other Vimeo links aren't rewritten, such as a `www.vimeo.com/...` link, an unlisted link with an extra code in the path (`vimeo.com/448062899/abc123`), or a `/channels/` or `/showcase/` page. Use the embed link for those. **EXAMPLE:**  ``` ``` **If you are not using Vimeo, SmartVideo supports [WordPress Media Library](/help/wordpress-media-library-file-sourcing/), [Amazon S3](/help/amazon-s3-file-sourcing/), [Google Cloud Storage](/help/google-cloud-file-sourcing/), [Wasabi](/help/wasabi-file-sourcing/), [Dropbox](/help/dropbox-file-sourcing/), [Google Drive](/help/google-drive-file-sourcing/), and even [pCloud](/help/pcloud-file-sourcing/) as the original file source location we are able to pull a copy from.** ## Controls You might have noticed that **controls** is included in every SmartVideo tag. That's because, in the majority of cases, controls are desired so that a user is able to alter playback. To remove controls from the player, simply remove **controls** from the tag. *Pro tip: if you remove **controls**, make sure to set the video to **autoplay** (and **muted** to make sure **autoplay** works). If you don't, the user will have no way of beginning video playback.* ``` ``` ## Play inline Safari on iOS forces videos to go fullscreen. Use **playsinline** to tell Safari not to. **Please note:** when auto-playing a video, enabling Play inline is essential for proper playback in IOS/Safari ``` ``` **Make player unresponsive (fixed dimensions)** Removing **class="swarm-fluid"** tells the player to maintain height and width no matter what changes are made to the size of the browser window. ``` ``` ## Tint the frosted-glass surfaces (`glassTint`) The SmartVideo player's control bar, menus, and overflow panel use a frosted-glass treatment that can subtly pick up your primary brand color. You can dial that effect up or down with `glassTint`. This one is **not** a tag attribute - the tint is applied as page styling, so it covers every player on the page at once. Set it in your global `swarmoptions`, under `theme`: ``` ``` `glassTint` accepts whole numbers from **0 to 15** (anything outside that range is clamped). The default is `3` - a soft wash; increase it for a more saturated brand feel, or set it to **0** to opt out and keep the glass neutral. 🎨 For the rest of the theme settings - colors, corner radius, play-button shape - see [Configure SmartVideo with swarmoptions](/help/configure-smartvideo-with-swarmoptions/) and [Customize player color](/help/customize-player-color/). *Note:* On older browsers that don't support `color-mix()` (e.g. Safari 15), the player automatically falls back to a gray frosted glass. Visitors who turn on **Reduce Transparency** or **High Contrast** in their OS will see solid backgrounds instead of glass - this is intentional, for accessibility. **That's it for our advanced SmartVideo tag options!** For the full list of site-wide settings - automatic replacement, theme, keyboard shortcuts, watermarks, banners, and ads - see [Configure SmartVideo with swarmoptions](/help/configure-smartvideo-with-swarmoptions/). Some of those, including the plugin settings, can be overridden for a single embed; theme and automatic replacement are site-wide only. See [Configure a single video with data-swarm-setup](/help/configure-a-single-video-with-data-swarm-setup/) for which is which. --- https://swarmify.com/help/basic-smartvideo-tag-options/ # Basic SmartVideo tag options Category: Setup & Installation / Custom / developers Created: 2020-02-23 Updated: 2026-10-05 Configure the SmartVideo tag with poster, autoplay, muted, and loop options, plus notes on using Vimeo embed links or plain numeric Vimeo URLs as video sources. We recommend using a PNG or JPEG to be compatible with all browsers. The `poster` value must be a full, public web URL (starting with `https://`). A file path from your own computer, like `/Users/you/Downloads/image.png`, will not work - your visitors' browsers cannot load files from your machine, so no thumbnail appears. Upload the image to your website first, then use its web address. On Squarespace, for example, upload the image under **Design > Website > Assets** (on older versions: **Design > Custom CSS > Manage Custom Files**) and right-click it to copy its URL. ``` ``` ## Autoplay Tells player to begin playback automatically as soon as possible. *Pro tip: unless combined with **muted**, many browsers will restrict **autoplay**. We recommend only using **autoplay** in combination with **muted**. Also, adding **playsinline** is essential for proper playback is iOS/Safari when auto-played.* ``` ``` ## Muted Tells player to begin playback with audio muted. ``` ``` ## Loop Tells player to restart the video once it ends. ``` ```   **That's it for our basic SmartVideo tag options!** If you need more advanced options - including how to tint the player's frosted-glass control bar with your brand color via `glassTint` - visit our [advanced SmartVideo tag options article](/help/advanced-smartvideo-tag-options/). Everything else on the page keeps your global settings. Reach for it when one video needs to differ — a testimonial that should loop silently, a training video where the number keys shouldn't jump around, one video that needs its own promo banner. For settings that apply site-wide, use [swarmoptions](/help/configure-smartvideo-with-swarmoptions/) instead. ## The format The attribute takes a **JSON object**. That means double quotes around every property name and every string value, so wrap the attribute itself in single quotes: ```html ``` This is stricter than the `swarmoptions` object, which is ordinary JavaScript. In `swarmoptions` you can write `{ loop: true }`; in `data-swarm-setup` it has to be `{"loop": true}`. **Get the JSON right before you publish.** If the value isn't a valid JSON object, SmartVideo ignores the whole attribute and loads the player with your normal settings. It writes a message to the browser console naming the value it rejected, except for a bare `null`, which is ignored silently. The video still plays and nothing else on the page is affected — but none of your per-video settings apply. Load the page once with the console open after editing the attribute. ### Watch your quotes The attribute is wrapped in single quotes and the JSON inside it uses double quotes. An apostrophe in your own text ends the attribute early and breaks the tag: ```html data-swarm-setup='{"plugins": {"overlay": {"overlays": [{"content": "Don't miss out"}]}}}' data-swarm-setup='{"plugins": {"overlay": {"overlays": [{"content": "Don't miss out"}]}}}' ``` The same applies to any HTML you put in banner `content` — use `'` for apostrophes and keep attribute values inside that HTML in double quotes, which are safe here because JSON already escapes them as `\"`. ## What you can set per video | Option | Type | What it does | | --- | --- | --- | | `controls` | boolean | Show or hide the control bar. | | `muted` | boolean | Start muted. | | `loop` | boolean | Restart when the video ends. | | `plugins` | object | Any plugin settings — `keyboard`, `overlay`, `watermark`, and ads. See the [plugin tables in the swarmoptions reference](/help/configure-smartvideo-with-swarmoptions/#keyboard-shortcuts). | | `playbackRates` | array of numbers | The speeds the playback-rate button steps through, in the order you list them. | | `skipSeconds` | number | How far both skip buttons jump. | | `hideControls` | array of strings | Removes controls. Accepts `skipForward`, `skipBackward`, `playbackRate`, `fullscreen`, and `pictureInPicture`. | Plugin settings are merged with your global ones rather than replacing them, so naming a single key changes just that key. `playbackRates`, `skipSeconds`, and `hideControls` are the same settings as the `player` group in [swarmoptions](/help/configure-smartvideo-with-swarmoptions/#player-controls-and-playback-speed), but in `data-swarm-setup` they sit at the top level of the JSON rather than under `player`: ```html ``` Each of the three overrides your site-wide value on its own: naming `skipSeconds` here leaves a site-wide `playbackRates` in place. `hideControls` replaces the site-wide list rather than adding to it, so `{"hideControls": []}` brings back every control your site-wide setting hid. ## What you can't set per video | Setting | Why | What to do instead | | --- | --- | --- | | `theme` | Colors, glass tint, corner radius, and button shape are applied as page styling, so they cover every player at once. | Set it in [swarmoptions](/help/configure-smartvideo-with-swarmoptions/). | | `autoreplace` | Which videos SmartVideo takes over is decided before any individual player exists. | Set it in [swarmoptions](/help/configure-smartvideo-with-swarmoptions/). | | `autoplay` | Playback is started from the tag's own attribute. See below. | Add or remove the `autoplay` attribute. | | `techOrder` | SmartVideo chooses the playback technology per browser and format. | — | Anything else you put in the attribute is passed through to the underlying player untouched. That is not a supported surface — if it isn't in the "What you can set per video" table, we can't promise it does anything useful, and options that rebuild the player's controls can break it outright. ## Which setting wins A setting can come from three places. Except for `poster` and `autoplay`, they apply in this order, each layer overriding the one above it: 1. **The tag's HTML attributes** — `controls`, `muted`, `loop`, `poster` on the `` tag itself. 2. **Your global `swarmoptions`** — the page-wide baseline. 3. **This video's `data-swarm-setup`** — wins over both. So a tag that carries `controls` but sets `{"controls": false}` in `data-swarm-setup` hides its controls: the attribute is the starting point, the attribute value in the JSON is the last word. `data-swarm-setup` only overrides the keys you actually name — everything else still comes from your global settings. `poster` is an exception: the tag's `poster` attribute wins over a site-wide default. `autoplay` is the other exception, covered next. ### Autoplay is the other exception Don't use `data-swarm-setup` to switch autoplay on or off. Autoplay is driven by the `autoplay` attribute on the tag itself, and SmartVideo starts playback from that attribute directly — `{"autoplay": false}` will not stop a tag that carries it. To control autoplay, add or remove the attribute: ```html ``` The [basic SmartVideo tag options](/help/basic-smartvideo-tag-options/) article covers `autoplay`, `muted`, `loop`, and `playsinline` as tag attributes. ## Example: turn off keyboard shortcuts for one video Useful when a video sits inside an interactive page and the arrow keys should scroll rather than seek. ```html ``` ## Example: loop one video with no controls ```html ``` Autoplay and muting stay on the tag as attributes; looping and the hidden control bar come from `data-swarm-setup`. Browsers block autoplay with sound, so keep `muted` set whenever you autoplay. ## Example: a promo banner on one video only *Available on the Growth and Pro plans.* ```html ``` ## Example: watermark one video differently *Available on the Pro plan.* ```html ``` ## When the attribute seems to be ignored 1. **Open the browser console.** When the attribute is bad, SmartVideo says so and quotes your value back — either `data-swarm-setup is not valid JSON; ignoring it` or `data-swarm-setup must be a JSON object; ignoring it`. A bare `null` is ignored silently. For other rejected values, the message identifies the problem faster than anything else on this list. 2. **Paste the attribute value into a JSON validator.** Any online JSON linter will do. Worth it when the console has told you the JSON is invalid but a long value makes the reason hard to spot by eye. 3. **Check the quoting.** Single quotes around the attribute, double quotes inside it. A double-quoted attribute containing double-quoted JSON ends the attribute early, and an apostrophe in your text does the same — write it as `'`. 4. **Check the value is an object.** It must start with `{` and end with `}`. A JSON array like `["loop"]` or a bare string is valid JSON but not a valid setting, so the whole attribute is ignored. 5. **Check it belongs here.** `theme` and `autoreplace` are global-only; move them to [swarmoptions](/help/configure-smartvideo-with-swarmoptions/). 6. **Still stuck?** Send us the tag and we'll tell you what's wrong with it. ## Related articles - [Configure SmartVideo with swarmoptions](/help/configure-smartvideo-with-swarmoptions/) - [Basic SmartVideo tag options](/help/basic-smartvideo-tag-options/) - [Advanced SmartVideo tag options](/help/advanced-smartvideo-tag-options/) --- https://swarmify.com/help/configure-smartvideo-with-swarmoptions/ # Configure SmartVideo with swarmoptions Category: Setup & Installation / Custom / developers Created: 2026-07-24 Updated: 2026-10-10 Complete reference for the global swarmoptions object — the Swarm CDN Key, automatic replacement, player theme, control bar and playback speed, keyboard shortcuts, analytics, watermarks, banners, and ads — with worked examples for common setups. `swarmoptions` is the settings object every SmartVideo player on the page reads. It is where you set your Swarm CDN Key, choose which videos SmartVideo takes over, and style the player to match your brand. It applies to the page it is on. Because the snippet normally lives in a shared site template or theme header, that usually means every page of your site — but if you paste it into a single page, only that page is affected. **You don't have to write this by hand.** The Configuration tab in your [dashboard](https://dash.swarmify.com/) generates the snippet for you from a set of toggles and color pickers. This article is the reference for what those settings produce, so you can read the generated code, extend it with options the configurator doesn't cover, or write it yourself. If you only want to change one video, use the [data-swarm-setup attribute](/help/configure-a-single-video-with-data-swarm-setup/) instead. **On this page** - [Where swarmoptions goes](#where-swarmoptions-goes) - [Account options](#account-options) — your key and iframe handling - [Choose which videos SmartVideo takes over](#choose-which-videos-smartvideo-takes-over) — `autoreplace` - [Style the player](#style-the-player) — `theme` - [Player controls and playback speed](#player-controls-and-playback-speed) — `player` - [Keyboard shortcuts](#keyboard-shortcuts) - [Google Analytics](#google-analytics) — `ga` - [Add a brand watermark](#add-a-brand-watermark) - [Add a promo banner](#add-a-promo-banner) - [Run video ads](#run-video-ads) - [When an option doesn't take effect](#when-an-option-doesnt-take-effect) ## Where swarmoptions goes Declare it in your site's ``, above the loader script: ```html ``` Replace `YOUR_SWARM_CDN_KEY` with the key from the Dashboard tab, the first screen after you log in to your [dashboard](https://dash.swarmify.com/). Keep `data-cfasync="false"` on both tags. It tells Cloudflare's Rocket Loader to leave them alone, which has broken playback on customer sites in the past. If you are installing SmartVideo for the first time, start with the [installation guide for your platform](/help/install-smartvideo-on-another-cms/) — this article is the reference for what you can put inside the object once it is there. ## How the options are organized Options include your account options (`swarmcdnkey`, `iframeReplacement`) and five optional groups: `autoreplace`, `theme`, `player`, `plugins`, and `ga`. `swarmcdnkey` is the only one you always need — the rest are optional, though a feature you do turn on may have required fields of its own (a watermark needs a `file`, for example). ```html ``` Option names are case-sensitive. `primaryColor` works; `primarycolor` is ignored. ## Account options | Option | Type | Default | What it does | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | `swarmcdnkey` | string | — | Your Swarm CDN Key. Required — without it the player never starts. | | `iframeReplacement` | `"video"` or `"iframe"` | `"video"` | How a replaced YouTube embed is rebuilt. The name has no YouTube prefix for backward compatibility; for Vimeo embeds use `vimeoIframeReplacement` under `autoreplace` (below). For supported YouTube and Vimeo embeds, the per-element form, `iframeReplacement` inside a `data-swarm-setup` attribute, overrides the replacement mode. | ## Choose which videos SmartVideo takes over These live under `autoreplace`. | Option | Type | Default | What it does | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | `smartvideotag` | boolean | `true` | Scan the page for `` tags.
